The nice thing about Charles the first was, he lost his head in 1649. His son, Chaz 2, did as you say borrow a great deal of gold from merchants in London. Then he closed the exchequer and stopped paying on his debts. A short while later his brother James 2 inherited the throne after Chaz 2 died, and James 2 was then ousted from office in one of the long train of abuses and usurpations that followed from the machinations of the Royal Institute fellows. An unpleasant lot.
One day when I was motorcycling around London at the turn of the millennium, I rode past a little street sign adverting "Tavistock Mews." I was immediately reminded of the infamous Tavistock Institute and their perfidy. So many "think" tanks, so few litres of formaldehyde.
It occurs to me to mention that there are a couple of other interesting "city states." One is the District of Corruption, also known as Mordor on the Potomac by my friend Skip the Free Rifleman. The other is Vatican City in the remains of Rome, Italy. I think there is also a tradition of a "forbidden city" in China and another in Japan, but I am not as conversant with their cultures.

My sister's only child was signed in to one of the clubs that barristers join in London. Unfortunately he has disowned my sister, so no information is coming from that quarter anyway. I wonder if his new profession had anything to do with him disowning my sister, the real reasons have to do with his father, but the thought had to enter my head anyway.
And the thought of your child, as you reported recently, going off the rails...
I do hope your living situation has improved. the Heartbreak that children can cause their parents I think is beyond comprehension for those of us who do not have children, and at this point count ourselves Lucky by comparison .

My son seems to have realised that something was very wrong with him! He spent yesterday investigating EMF leakages from his equipment and found plenty. He has now disabled the aerials within his laptop and computer, reducing the radiation in his bedroom. He is already a lot more normal, thanks for asking!
I think your hunch about the London private club scene could be a factor. They are full of toxic masculinity which easily impresses young minds. They think that these clubs are essential for their careers.... maybe they are but not if you have to estrange your own mother! Sad.
