I thought they converted for political expedience: being squeezed between the Muslims and the Christians, conversion to either of those religions would mean dominance by those communities and thus loss of sovereignty, whereas conversion to Judaism ensured continued political independence.

Long overdue. There's so much worthless bunk about Khazars around the place.
But I think the Greek influence is underplayed, this was a region that the Greeks had long connections to and is where Jason and the Argonauts were reputed to have travelled to.

I was accidentally lectured at by a guy yesterday who just plastered my back to the wall about this stuff while I was trying to have a nice conversation with an old friend. It felt like I was in quicksand swatting horseflies. I'm overly sensitive and very socially awkward especially after 2 years of relative isolation so I'm far too easily discombobulated. It also covers up a very real menace, which is child trafficking. It spreads confusion and rumours which tend to make most people dismiss the entire idea that there are criminal networks making a business out of child slavery. People dismiss it, forgetting the very real and publicly revealed Epstein/Maxwell scandals and their CIA/MI6 connections, among other news items. Mixing truth with lies is a CIA tactic. It's a way to section off critical opinion so that the majority of the public dismiss the whole issue as nut-case, foil-hat stupidity. Big example: the UFO controversy.
