Re. mothers, I think they just can't win. I have some similar issues and resentments that I've been thinking through of late and, alongside the fact that they are terribly young, you are going to live your own life anyway (I'm pretty much signed up to pre-birth life planning) and it's not necessarily going to be compatible with theirs. Nor do I know how much I contributed to how things were. At the risk of sounding like John Mortimer, I tend to see my mother's attitude towards me as varying between neglect and interference, yet I probably encouraged the neglect - it being preferable to interference. And then there are the extraordinarily high standards we set them which, especially in this world, are almost impossible to achieve - to the point that, in turn, our children will make similar complaints about us. It's a helluva demand to place on someone for nearly two decades, either side of about 30 years old.
Frances, it was good to hear about your childhood, despite it being so traumatic. I went through something similar with my mother, who was obsessed with me. She wanted a Mini-Me, and of the two daughters, I was her choice. But it was a bad choice, because I was a free-thinking autonomous child (as much as I could be until being forced into government indoctrination camp). Oddly enough, she was the one to encourage my freedom and self-knowledge during the earliest formative years. So, by the time I was five, my mother's plan to control my every breath and movement was fully thwarted. And the harder she tried to change me, the further I withdrew. I, too, read voraciously. I also wrote poetry, sang, and danced as often as I could. When I became an adult, I moved away from my family and "friends," none of whom ever truly cared about the "me" they didn't want to acknowledge. I bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles to make a career in music. And whatever kindness and care my mother still had for me then was immediately ripped from me until the last 9 months of her life. She really punished herself far more than me by pulling away, because I had already cut the apron strings around the age of 10 or 11.
Anyway, I'm glad you stayed true to yourself, even through the trauma, because you are a beacon of wisdom and true hope. Thank you for your work and for your very presence in this world.💝
