I was listening to this Lex Fridman podcast when I reached a point which super-impressed me. If you can spare the time, or listen while you do something menial, do try to hear the whole podcast, it will take you away from yourself and any existential limits.
Stoicism wasn’t named precisely, but I agree with the concepts; believe that he did mention Native American coming of age rites; more meaningful than Bar Mitzvah, cotillion, senior prom; good stuff.
Was he advocating open marriage, or simply a more open heart toward others’ love and success? ( Didn’t we try that back in the’70-80’s?)
Personally I have no respect for rituals of any kind. Progressively I have dispensed with them entirely due to the pain of being excluded from them..... Christmas/Birthdays etc.
I always enjoy the loves and successes of others, but my idea of success may be a little quirky! What many consider failure (such as losing a job or missing out on education) I think of as a successful escape from the matrix.
I am too much of a naturopath to wish enslavement on anyone!
I listened, and, at times, watched. Thank you for the link. Ah, to be 40-50 and immersed in the generation of ideas, practical and philosophical.
Three things beside Being/Doing/Becoming: 1) though in most ways the conversation steered clear of personal references, near the end Daniel talked about his father, and truth be told, I may have more in common with the dad, when Daniel mentioned his individuation; 2) homeschooled; 3) they ended talking about mushroom experiences, and I'm beginning to bump into the positive mention of them...
Lastly: because I was on YouTube, one of the few things I subscribe to is newsworthy:
The uptick of mentions of hallucinogens like mushrooms is very suspicious.... my spidey sense is alerted that we are being nudged to value dream states more than reality perhaps?
Thanks for the link to Harley Schlanger's latest wisdom.... I agree entirely (as you know) and get very frustrated with talking heads who insist upon ignoring the overarching Brit Bollox from the Crown Corporation. 1984's endless war was not fiction, it was an intention that George Orwell knew would become our future.
Mushrooms are being touted as “awakening” and curative. I have already been there for the cheap, collegiate version; maybe find some of my own to deal with chronic aches. But it’s a weird thing, as your spiidey senses say, that so much mention these days as from ancient cultures.
We as humans have abilities to heal each other and release healthy chemicals and I believe, hormones into our systems. We have the ability to do this on our own as well.
I am guessing this is what is looked for in the use of mushrooms. I am not great at the naming of the specifics... ie the chemicals or hormones. I am more interested in the experience itself. What it is, why and how it is achieved.
As a generalization I would say 'we' are fairly clueless as to the healing, loving, giving capacities of our bodies.
As an aside, and maybe as a response to something you wrote Will... Erik Fromm writes to love as an orientation of character. Something I feel, especially in what we are witnessing now, is incredibly important.
And Will, I wonder (and maybe I am misinterpreting your words) that you cannot see that as long as you are earthside you are part of life. Age does not diminish that.
The general context that I hear Daniel. Lex, Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, etc is basically:
-Oneness, total integration
-Lasting curatives for chronic pain
-Curatives for psychological trauma
So social, physical and psychological curatives from ancient cultures which have been discarded in favor of: pills, physical therapy (including chiropractic), and a laundry list of psychological therapy, almost as many as the pain “killer” aisle at the grocery/pharmacy.
China town NYC.:1969-70: Recall going to the Tai Chi master teacher, small old revered wise man who felt one’s pulse with delicate but strong fingers observing the patient’s irises; then scrawl characters to take downstairs to the room full of long small drawers full of herbs.
I am also simply referring to the use of breath and sound vibration within our own bodies as healing. As well as the healing capacity of touch in intimate relationship, although in my small experience this is not well understood and is, unfortunately, perverted 'culturally' (not sure that is the most appropriate word).
And outside of intimate relationship touch can be, is, very healing.
It is all severely perverted by the idea that we need intervention with drugs, which is a turning away from our own unique gifts, which is unfortunately taught to 'us', this deep fear of self.
Yes, got one on order and going to try to send one to Zelensky! (While I was on YouTube last night, I caught his Opening Address to the Davosians; inspiring laundry list.)
I decided to get a couple of hanging basket of pansies about a month ago;
they were fresh, local, affordable, and I wanted to see if I could overcome my distaste for sticky fingers deadheading.
So far it’s a new favorite daily tasks. I need not get them all each day, they’ll be there tomorrow. It’s done at the same time as watering, and I rinse my fingers with the fine diverting nozzle. They are lovely.
I have a brief sensation of panic if my hands get sticky too. I remember it from childhood, trying to eat a jam sandwich or rapidly melting ice lolly. It put me off eating fruit until I had to harvest ripe peaches or figs to give my horse a treat when I lived in Spain. The stickiness was easily solved by dipping my hands in the irrigation trenches which wound between the trees. The memory of freshy picked squishy drippy fruit is so nostalgic now.
"Nevertheless, I do love to hear people trying to express such profundities….."
I do as well.
I have this conversation bookmarked in my watch later file and had forgotten it.
I will watch or just listen when I have the space within me to do so.
Thank you ❤️
(Can’t post Reply: Sheila “I make $…from home in Macedonia” is piggy backed.)
Did see Hugo’s Dream Machine. Do you think that they could use some in Ukraine? They need so much more…
Don’t know how it was fixed; maybe had to go to Macadamia nuts first: don’t want to repeat repeat repeat too much. Thanks.

Intriguing.

I like Lex, he is a sincere guy imo.I’ll give this one a listen tonight, thanks Frances
