I think that Eric Arthur Blair (aka George Orwell) and his closest friends were privy to the long term plans which were being hatched in the academic circles they frequented. Those ideas were being dripped into education and influencing everyone from the UN down to corporate business.
I think that 1984 was an exercise in extrapolation of those ideas.
When I first read the book at age 14, I was frightened by it. I made the mistake of thinking that everyone would be equally frightened and would do whatever they could to avoid society degenerating to IngSoc under Big Brother.
The predator class greased the book into libraries, schools and curriculums from the late 1950s onwards. Films were made and shown on black and white TV screens.
The predator psychos didn’t find it frightening. They found it stimulating. They profited from it and the fear it generated. They learned from our reaction, but they never stopped their totalitarian tiptoe which is now a totalitarian trample.
Happy 120th birthday, Eric. You did well and as long as your books are read there is hope that humanity can recognise its barbarity and rein it in. Maybe they might even figure out how to use all that knowledge, power and energy to create a better world. You never know…..
