Thursday, September 7 is provisionally the hottest UK day of the year so far, the Met Office has announced.
The mercury hit 32.6°C in the village of Wisley, west of Woking in Surrey, earlier on Thursday, beating the previous high of 32.2°C recorded on June 10 and 25.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steven Ramsdale said: ‘High pressure is situated to the south-east of the UK, which is bringing more settled conditions and temperatures well above average for the time of year.
‘While the highest temperatures are expected in the south, heatwave conditions have already been met for much of England and Wales, with parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland also likely to continue to see some unseasonably high temperatures. ’
Weather enthusiasts may remember that the decidedly grim summer weather in the past couple of months was caused by the position of the jet stream in relation to the UK.
It was stuck to our south, leaving us with cold, wet and unsettled weather – but now, it’s sitting far north of the British Isles, drawing heat towards it and providing this belated summer heatwave at the start of autumn. ~ UK Metro
In fact, the heat is so welcome and significantly unusual that we could end up with some exciting ‘tropical nights’. Technically, that means when temperatures reach above 20°C all through the night. Non-technically, that means when you can’t get to sleep because of the heat even though you have been on top of your duvet, wrestling with your partner for hours during your Tantric exercises.
UK Health Authorities were quick to plaster all media with red flashing warnings and advice. However, nobody saw them because they had all pulled a sickie and were jamming themselves cheek by jowl on Brighton’s beaches.
Across south-east England, sweating residents and day-trippers have been warned to take precautions as this month's heatwave continues. Emergency services said they expected to be busier and residents were urged to be prepared and remain hydrated.
British publicans cheered at the prospect of actually making some money this year.
Kent County Council urged drivers travelling through Kent to be prepared for huge traffic jams and to pack plenty of water. Sunbathing on the hard shoulder is strictly forbidden. Deck chairs along the M25 will be removed and the occupants fined £200 on the spot.
The BBC kindly commented that West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service asks people to be mindful of the dangers when spending time in and around open water. "Even on a hot day, the water will be cold, which can lead to cold water shock and drowning," it said.
Jim from East London said “You don’t effin say!” as he packed his rucksack and began cycling towards the coast. Jim can’t drive his van because he doesn’t have £12.50p for the London ULEZ tax.
In a social media post, Surrey County Council said: "If you're going out, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen frequently (SPF30 or more and 4 or 5 star UVA protection), wear a hat, sunglasses & light, loose-fitting clothes."
Jim prefers his Olive Oil and always wears a hat to protect his tattooed scalp from prying eyes. Jim was last seen, wearing his lurid swim shorts and joyfully overtaking traffic on the M25.
